In 2004, after three family members were diagnosed with breast cancer, sisters Linda Longman and Susan Godin decided to participate in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer which involved walking 60 km over two days and raising $2,000 each. In order to raise their $4,000, Linda and Susan held a silent auction and a dance that first year.
After participating in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer for three years, Linda and Susan decided to sign up for the CIBC Run for the Cure and keep the money they raised local. After six years of fundraising, they have raised over $57,000 – well on their way to meeting their goal of raising $100,000 for breast cancer.
Last year’s silent auction included 198 items on the silent auction, 150 “balloon burst” prizes, 6 live auction items donated from over 260 sponsors. Auction items ranged from a hat and t-shirt to round-trip tickets to any scheduled WestJet destination (value of $4,649).
Planning for the annual event begins in January when the sisters hit the streets of London and surrounding area canvassing the local businesses for donations. Linda and Susan would like to thank their husbands, parents, siblings, and children for all of their support and contributions to making this event so successful.
